New certificate course aims to fill cultural skills gap
The demand for skilled and knowledgeable tourism practitioners is driving the creation of a new educational opportunity for those wanting to specialise in cultural activities.
Established by the Sir George Seymour National College of Travel and Tourism, the 34-week full time certificate course is due to commence in March, although others are being planned throughout next year.
The course is designed to cater
for those looking for a career in cultural tourism and will cover topics such as customs and practice, the use of Maori language expression and place names, the significance of natural attractions and a number of other skills related to tourism and travel.
The college’s general manager, Lyndon Leaborn, says the establishment of the new course has been driven by demand from both those wishing to enter this section of the industry and from employers grappling with skills shortages.
“The majority of visitors to New Zealand are interested in this country’s history and culture, creating a greater demand for those who not only have an interest in it, but have the skills and background to cater for that aspect of tourism,” the college spokesman says.
